| Closed class | β | β | β |
| Limited membership | β | β | β |
| Grammatical function | β | β | β |

How They Work Together.
In a sentence like βShe gave the book to himβ, all three classes appear:
-
She (pronoun)βreplaces a full NP as subject
-
the (determiner)βspecifies which book
-
to (preposition)βshows relationship (recipient)
-
him (pronoun)βreplaces a full NP as object of preposition
Each closed-class word does minimal semantic work but essential grammatical workβtheyβre the glue that holds sentences together.
