Adverb.
A part of speech that typically modifies verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs.
Adverb clause.
A dependent clause functioning as an adverbial, introduced by a subordinating conjunction.
Adverbial.
Any word, phrase, or clause functioning to modify a verb, adjective, adverb, or sentence. A role in a sentence, not a form.
Conjunctive adverb.
An adverb that signals a logical relationship between independent clauses or sentences (however, therefore, moreover, etc.).
Dangling participle.
A participial phrase that does not clearly modify the subject of the main clause.
Sentence-level adverbial.
An adverbial that modifies the entire sentence rather than the verb, expressing the speaker’s attitude or evaluation (fortunately, honestly, surprisingly).
Participial phrase.
A phrase built on a present or past participle, functioning adverbially (this chapter) or adjectivally (Chapter 13).
Subordinating conjunction.
A word that introduces a dependent clause (when, because, although, if, etc.).
