Adjectival.
Any word, phrase, or clause functioning to modify a noun (a role in a sentence).
Adjective.
A part of speech that typically modifies nouns and can be graded.
Attributive position.
The position before a noun in the NP (the tall man).
Contact clause.
A relative clause with the relative pronoun omitted (the book I read).
Dangling participle.
A participial phrase that doesn’t clearly modify the intended noun.
Non-restrictive modifier.
A modifier that adds supplementary information about an already-identified referent; set off with commas.
Noun adjunct.
A noun that modifies another noun in attributive position (coffee table, government report).
Participial phrase.
A phrase built on a participle (present or past) functioning adjectivally.
Post-modifier.
A modifier that follows the noun it modifies.
Pre-modifier.
A modifier that precedes the noun it modifies.
Predicative position.
The position after a linking verb (The man is tall).
Relative clause.
A dependent clause introduced by a relative pronoun or adverb, modifying a noun.
Restrictive modifier.
A modifier that identifies or limits the referent; no commas.
